The top of the raffia line: our closest raffia braid run out to a fifteen-centimetre brim, which needs roughly forty per cent more braid than the 11 cm version. Heavy for raffia, and unmistakable from a distance.

How open the weave is

Close braid — narrow gaps across an unusually wide brim.

Braid woven in Madagascar · hand-blocked in Gata de Gorgos, Spain.

Straw is a plant

Four things
this hat does.

Printed before you buy, not after you complain. A hat that cannot carry all four lines does not go on sale here.

  • Cracking

Raffia goes brittle in dry heat. Left in a parked car it will crack along the braid; mist it lightly a few times a season and it stays supple.

  • Fading

Strong summer sun lifts the colour by a shade or two over one season. That is expected, not a fault.

  • Reshaping

Soaked or squashed, the brim will wave. Mist it, press it flat between two cloths and let it dry on a flat surface.

  • Weave gaps

The braid is open. Held up to the light you will see daylight straight through the gaps between the ribbons.

Care

  • Keep it out of dry heat

Never leave it in a parked car or against a radiator. Dry heat is what makes straw crack.

  • Mist, do not soak

A light mist of water two or three times a season keeps the fibres supple. Do not soak it.

  • Reshaping

Mist lightly, press flat between two cloths and leave it on a flat surface overnight.

  • Storage

Store it upside down on its crown, or in a hat box. Never stack anything on the brim.
