A plain blocked crown with a ten-centimetre brim, made from a broad raffia braid that we deliberately left open. Hold it up and you can count the gaps. It folds into a bag without complaint and comes out with the creases showing until you mist it.

Head circumference

Measure just above the ears, level across the forehead. Between two ranges, take the larger.

  • Cracking

    Raffia goes brittle in dry heat. Left in a parked car it will crack along the braid; mist it lightly a few times a season and it stays supple.

  • Fading

    Strong summer sun lifts the colour by a shade or two over one season. That is expected, not a fault.

  • Reshaping

    Soaked or squashed, the brim will wave. Mist it, press it flat between two cloths and let it dry on a flat surface.

  • Weave gaps

    The braid is open. Held up to the light you will see daylight straight through the gaps between the ribbons.

Care

  • Keep it out of dry heat

    Never leave it in a parked car or against a radiator. Dry heat is what makes straw crack.

  • Mist, do not soak

    A light mist of water two or three times a season keeps the fibres supple. Do not soak it.

  • Reshaping

    Mist lightly, press flat between two cloths and leave it on a flat surface overnight.

  • Storage

    Store it upside down on its crown, or in a hat box. Never stack anything on the brim.
